What is Herpes?
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common, lifelong viral infection causing painful, fluid-filled blisters or ulcers, typically on the mouth (HSV-1) or genitals (HSV-2). Highly contagious, it spreads via skin-to-skin contact, even when symptoms are absent. While incurable, antiviral medications effectively manage outbreaks and reduce transmission.

Key Aspects of Herpes Virus
Types: HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes (cold sores), while HSV-2 causes genital herpes
. Both can cause either, particularly through oral-genital contact
.
Symptoms: Initial symptoms include tingling or itching, followed by blisters, sores, or ulcers. Symptoms can include fever, body aches, and swollen lymph nodes. Many people have no symptoms.
Transmission: Direct skin-to-skin contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Prognosis: The virus remains in the body for life, dormant in nerve cells. It can "wake up" (reactivate), leading to recurrent outbreaks, which are usually less severe than the initial one.
